The rich and stimulating theme of vanitas, revisited through an innovative exhibition, provides for the display of more than fifty works of the great masters – from Baschenis to Solimena, from Murillo to Cagnacci, made between the end of the sixteenth century and the eighteenth century – that deal with the theme of the transience of life and the essence of the ephemeral human vanity.
The important group of works is confronted with a selection of works by international contemporary artists – donated by Renato Alpegiani that this year has enriched the permanent collections of the MEF – whose pivot revolves around the theme of the passage from life to death, from near side and beyond.
The thirty-six artists in the exhibition with photographs, installations, sculptures and paintings, ranging from Carol Rama to Danh Vo, from General Idea to Thomas Saraceno, from Santiago Sierra to Maria Lai.
From still life to baroque paintings of figure all leads, both in ancient and in the contemporary works, the theme of the exhibition which is completed by twelve photographs by Fred Goudon portraying the main athletes of international rugby.
