Maria Novella Papafava dei Carraresi's Galleria Itinerarte is proud to present 'Skyscrapers', an exhibition in honour of the late Bobo Ivancich, a much-loved artist in Venice and a tremendous personality. The centerpiece of the show, curated by Katia Margolis and Robin Saikia, is a major work by Ivancich, a large scale depiction of the Chrysler Building in New York.
Other contributing artists include Roger de Montebello, Geoffrey Humphries, Geoffrey Leckie, Daniele Gabriele and Martino Sorteni.
Bobo Ivancich, Marquis de Sandoval y de la Torriente was born in Venice in 1963 of a noble Italian-Cuban family.
The family has always been very close to prominent artists including Ernest Hemingway and Ezra Pound – with whom Bobo played chess as a child – characters that appear frequently in Ivancich’s paintings alongside Hollywood friends such as Quentin Tarantino and Jude Law. Both “Enfant prodige” and “Enfant terrible”, Bobo started painting at an early age, after seeing his fellow countryman, Wilfredo Lam, at work. As a child, Bobo often visited Peggy Guggenheim’s home before it become the contemporary Venetian Foundation and the Venice Biennale of contemporary art. Peggy was a dear family friend and Bobo lived in Venice at Palazzo Barbaro, where Peggy (and earlier the American painter Sargent) had also lived.
When Bobo was eighteen, the great American collector Evelyn Lambert was among the first to recognise his talent and acquire works for her collection. Later his works have been sold to some of the most influential collectors in the world including such families as the Getty, the Rosekrans, the Cipriani and the Versace family’s recent acquisition at Sotheby’s auction. A major influence in Ivancich’s creative life has been his long friendship with the great Italian master Gino De Dominicis, of whom he is considered his Printed in Italy, 2011 and “erede spirituale”.
Andy Warhol spoke of Mario Schifano as the best Italian artist and Mario Schifano once said of Bobo Ivancich: “He is more of an artist than me!” An eclectic artist, in his early years, Ivancich found his major expression in abstract work and “performance” art, then in conceptual works, turning lately to hyper-realism and digital art. He partecipated at "Open" 2005-2006 with Kosuth, Pistoletto, Chia, Bourgeois and other important artists. Bobo Ivancich also partecipated at the 54th Venice Biennale 2011, International Art Exhibition, Italian Pavilion. Bobo Ivancich - who lived and worked most of his life between Venice and New York - died in Monselice on March 8th 2016.
Itinerarte is an exhibition space opened in Venice in January 2014 and managed by the Cultural The Pleiades , founded in 1999 by Maria Novella Papafava dei Carraresi.
