After the important restoration that has returned the original decorative splendor, the picturesque environments of the Church and the Doge dell'Antichiesetta from April 1, 2015 become the centerpiece of a new and fascinating historical and artistic itinerary to the discovery of hidden Doge's treasures at Palazzo Ducale.
The new path - usable on reservation and with qualified guide (see general info) - adds to the already extraordinary cultural proposal of the Civic Museums Foundation of Venice and is held in the places reserved to the Doge located in the wing of the Palazzo Ducale contiguous to the Basilica.
By accessing the Porta della Carta, full of sculptures and marble decorations, go up to the Loggia, from which the highest authority of the Serenissima overlooked in public festivals.
From here you can have an overview of the whole area marciana with all the buildings in different eras and styles today mark its perimeter.
It then goes to the Loggia Foscari, plug in the original Renaissance Gothic Palazzo Ducale. Inside are the coffers who preserved the treasures of the state. From here continue to the roof terrace and, passing through a section of the Doge - where he conducted his private life in the company of family members, the grooms and servants - climb a steep staircase adorned by the image of St. Christopher Titian to the church and all'Antichiesetta, frescoed the mid-eighteenth century by Jacopo Guarana and Jerome and Augustine Mengozzi Colonna.
In this environment, bright, enlarged by the trompe l'oil of the frescoes on the wall, there is a sculpture of the Madonna and Child with Angels, by Jacopo Sansovino. Nell'Antichiesetta are preserved models of Sebastiano Ricci served for the mosaic of the second arch of the Basilica with the transfer of the body of St. Mark. In these local doge adempieva to personal religious practices before reaching the adjacent Hall of the Senate, where the expected treatment of public life.
The construction of the new route was made possible thanks to the synergy between the Foundation of Venice Civic Museums and institutions that work at different levels in the challenging activity enhancement of the Palazzo Ducale, in particular: the Superintendence of Fine Arts and Landscape for Venice and its Lagoon, the Directorate of Museums of the Veneto and the City of Venice
The restoration and the technological upgrading of the new route, were made with funding from the Italian Committee under the Joint UNESCO - International Private Committees for the Safeguarding of Venice and through the generosity of sponsors.
