Funeral Monument of Clement XIV

Created by the great sculptor from Veneto on a commission from the merchant Carlo Giorgi, who was very close to Pope Ganganelli. It was the first important work by Canova in Rome, with which he made a total departure from the type of funeral monument associated with the stylings of Bernini. At the top is the Pontiff and below are the personifications of Temperance and Meekness. The central door symbolizes the passage from life to death.
