Funeral Stele of Giovanni Volpato
Historical Center
- Artist: Antonio Canova
- Location: Funeral Stele of Giovanni Volpato
- Date: 1804 - 1807
A monument in memory of the engraver and friend of Canova. The sculptor paid the expenses of creating the work from his own pocket, so great was his affection for Volpato, with whose daughter, Domenica, he was romantically involved. The neoclassic work is in the vein of an ancient relief, showing a sitting woman with her head bowed in front of a column on which is a bust.
It was Volpato who “recommended” Canova to the pontiff, helping him obtain the prestigious commission for the funeral monument of Clement XIV located in the same church.
