È il presepe più antico della storia dell’arte. Fu realizzato dal grande Arnolfo di Cambio su commissione di papa Niccolò IV circa 70 anni dopo il primo esemplare, che la tradizione attribuisce a san Francesco d’Assisi (1223). Attorno alla grotta della Natività, che custodiva le reliquie della sacra culla di Gesù, Sisto V concepì la sua Cappella Sistina, progettata da Domenico Fontana. Originariamente collocato nella navata destra, è oggi esposto nel museo della basilica.

For several years, unfortunately, it has been exhibited in the museum of the Basilica, but from the time of its creation, on the wishes of Nicholas IV, it was in the righthand aisle. Around the "grotto of the Nativity", which held the relics of the manger, Sixtus V placed his Cappella Sistina, designed by Domenica Fontana. It is the oldest nativity scene in the history of art, created by the great Arnolfo about 70 years after its first presentation, as tradition has it, by Saint Francis of Assisi in Greccio (1223).
