Bridge of Sighs
San Marco
- Location: Bridge of Sighs
- Date: 1616
Visible from the Ponte della Paglia and from the Ponte della Canonica, it is one of the most celebrated monuments of the city. Built in Istrian stone by Antonio Contin, who finished the work in 1614 for doge Marino Grimani, whose stem is visible on its exterior under the depiction of Justice, it was to connect the Palazzo Ducale, seat of the courts, to the new prison building. Tradition holds that the name comes from the sighs of the condemned who could see the sun from the small grates.
