The painting, which is signed and dated, is one of very few of the artist’s works still in Venice. The Virgin in enthroned and crowned by angels, surrounded by Saint James, from whom the church takes its name, Saint Andrew and the medical Saints Cosmas and Damiano (to whom the altar is dedicated), perhaps in reference to the illness that struck the painter as he worked on the piece.
