Behind the main altar of the Basilica di San Marco is the priceless Pala d'Oro, one of the world's largest precious objects. It is an elaborate byzantine and venetian work in gold carried out beginning in the tenth century and added to until its definitive completion in 1342 with the Christ giving his blessing at its center and the numerous figures of saints in enamel.
