DESCRIZIONE:
Erected in the Ninth Cenury on the spot where it is believed that Saint Peter was crucified, it was rebuilt at the end of the 1400s on a commission from Ferdinando II d’Aragona, perhaps by Baccio Pontelli.
The monastery of the church is made up of two cloisters, in the first of which is the famed Tempietto of Bramante. The interior of the church is made up of a nave, with sides chapels designed by, among others, Vasari, Ammannati, Daniele da Volterra and Bernini.
THINGS TO KNOW:
On the main altar of the church was the splendid Transfiguration by Raphael, that, in 1797, was brought to Paris on orders from Napoleon. After the Restoration in 1816, it was returned to Rome, but to the Vatican Museums.
