Florence - After the success of the Museo del Novecento in Milan, which opened in late 2010, and the anticipations of M9, which will open soon in the Venetian mainland, even Florence opens its Museum of the 20th century. It is dedicated, like the first, to the Italian art of the 20th century and will offer, similarly to the second, a broader cultural and historical perspective of this period.

From Tuesday, June 24th , 2014 at 12pm, the Spedale delle Leopoldine in Piazza Santa Maria Novella, recently restored, will open to the public to show a part of the collections of the City. Divided into 15 exhibition areas, it hosts almost 300 works, presented via a "backwards" itinerary, starting from 1990 and going back to the early years of the so-called "short century."

From De Chirico to Morandi, from Emilio Vedova to Guttuso, until the Florentine section of the Venice Biennale, the new museum will combine two identities: the civic museum, through a story that links the public collections to the history of the city in the 20th century, and an "immersive" museum, integrating the heritage of the City with national and international artistic events that occurred in the territory in the mid-Sixties.

The presence of music, poetry, cinema, architecture, but also the story of the interaction between the arts, fashion and mass communication that defined a significant part of the century, recreate the environment in which the works were created, allowing the audience to understand the innovative and interdisciplinary concept of the museum.

Along the itinerary, the multimedia format "Inside the Twentieth Century" will present materials such as documents, vintage photographs, television interviews, magazines and literary texts, but also documentaries produced by the Department of Culture of the City of Florence for the Museum, providing visitors with the opportunity to study and customize their visit according to their interests.
