Tomb of the unknown soldiers
Against the cemetery wall, crowned by laurel and cypress trees, lies the tomb of the Ten Unknown Soldiers, who died on the Karst and were buried here on 4 November 1921. The remains of the eleventh Italian soldier, chosen by war-bereaved mother Maria Bergamas, were transported by train from Aquileia to Rome and solemnly buried there the same day at the Vittoriano monument. The tomb of the Ten Unknown Soldiers was designed by architect Guido Cirilli and features an altar surmounted by an arcosolium facing the Karst. On a clear day, you can see the Karst front, where the First World War left its tragic mark.
