Deo Gratias is a photographic project born to record the cooperation activity of “Women for Women” Association, undertaken twenty years ago in Burkina Faso, the third poorest country in the world, the one with the highest rate of illiteracy and with a life expectancy not outdoing fifty years.
Nevertheless here you can breathe an air of culture and tradition; the country hosts an important international movie festival, theatre shows, and musical events.
The cooperation project starts in 1990, with the contribution of Università degli Studi Milano’s Agriculture Department and today it helps mainly the women who actually are the backbone of Africa, and all around them turn the home economics in the rural areas.
The title of this exhibition, Deo gratias, was borrowed by the photography studio that Bruce Vanderpuije opened in Ghana in 1992. Silvia Amodio, a journalist and a photographer, has told about this place trough the portrait, avoiding the usual cliché, to focus on the single person.
To a caring and sensitive eye some details disclose many datas: religion, social class, job, passions. She put up a photographic set in the market, in the streets, in crowded places, carrying along just a cloth that she used as a backdrop to extract people from the odd reality. The theme of these faces is pride, poor but with dignity
