Built on the same spot as the preceding Church of San Paolo (1608-20) by Carmelitani Scalzi, it was rebuilt for the victorious outcome of the Thirty-Years War, after the battle of the White Mountain near Prague between 1620 and 1626. The work was commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, designed by Stefano Maderno and the facade was by Giovanni Battista Soria (inspired by the nearby Santa Susanna). The interior, with one simple nave, has three chapels on each side, including the Cornaro Chapel, a masterpiece of Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
