This is the biggest piazza along Via del Corso. It gets its name from the column of Marcus Aurelius built from 180-193 A.D. for the celebrated victory of the Emperor against the Germans and Sarmatians, illustrated by the reliefs following the style of the column of Trajan. From 1588-89, work was done under Sixtus V to replace the statue of the Emperor with that of Saint Paul.
On the piazza are Palazzo Chigi, today hosting the offices of the President of the Council of Ministers, Palazzo Wedekind, once home to the Vatican Post and today belonging to the newspaper “Il Tempo” and, on the other side of Via del Corso, Galleria Colonna, recently renamed for the famous roman acotr Alberto Sordi.
