One of the most famous streets in the city, it gets its name from Pope Julius II della Rovere (1503-13), who wanted the street parallel to the river (it should be remembered that the so-called Lungotevere riverwalk did not exist until the end of the 1800s) to connect Ponte Sisto with the church of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini. It was built in 1508 by Bramante and quickly became home to many important buildings, and was particularly favored by wealthy florentine bankers living in the area. Today, it is still one of the most prestigious streets in Rome and is lined by buildings belonging to numerous families of great import such as the Falconieri, Sacchetti, Ricci, Spada, Farnese and others.
