The Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major
Placed in the apse built by Nicholas IV (1288-92), the frescoes are divided in two parts. The large tondo with Jesus crowning the Virgin: the two are seated on a rich throne, similar to an oriental divan, a byzantine influence; at their feet is the sun and the moon, choruses of angels, saints and Nicholas IV and the Cardinal-nephew Giacomo Colonna. In the lower section, the Annunciation, Nativity, Adoration of the Magi, Presentation at the Temple and, at center, Death of the Virgin.
