Unknown, remote islands in the ocean, epic journeys. Storms, diseases, robbers. Discoveries, greed and privilege. Luxury, care and ostentation. Once the spices were all this and more. They fueled a powerful economic mechanism, an ongoing treasure hunt. Mirage can generate the great race for geographical discoveries and wars can change the course of history.
These powders exotic and fragrant, with their thousand shades of colors from gold to crimson, from remote islands and distant lands, is dedicated to the exhibition on the spice route. Terre - Peoples - Conquests to MAO, Museum of Oriental Art in Turin, from 30 May to 27 September 2015.
The exhibition consists of 73 images of great photographers of National Geographic, it is curated by Marco Cattaneo with the advice of the historian Alessandro Vanoli.
The course illustrates the main stages of the sea routes and markets, and then explore some flavorings in specific sections: starting from dyeing carpets continuing with rooms devoted to chili, ginger, nutmeg, saffron, vanilla, cloves, cinnamon, sesame with perfumes and objects evocative images of crops of ingredients that still enrich our dishes, feeding the taste and imagination.
