Heads, without bodies. Faces from which internal complexities are unleashed, intensity on the surface of the skin, bones and cartilage pierce the features, amplifying them, distorting them. A living cranium remains, to be explored with a pencil or a burin. The procedure is inspired by artists such as Lucien Freud and Marlene Dumas, as well as existentialist literature. Self-portraits, famous and unknown faces, a celebration of design as a project, as well as a finished work. Mattia Serra was born in Oristano. He obtained a ‘Liceo Artistico’ secondary school qualification in Cagliari, before moving to Milan to attend the Accademia di Brera fine arts school. He graduated in 2006 and then moved to Venice to specialise in graphic arts at the Accademia di Belle Arti, where he also worked teaching engraving. His most recent works, a series of headshots of Marylin Monroe in black and white, where displayed in a collective, curated by Paolo Pancaldi, hosted in Pergine, Trentino.
He lives and works in Venice.
