Founded in 336 by Pope Mark I, originally the church was facing in the opposite direction, the change of orientation taking place with renovations between the Eighth and Ninth Centuries under Adrian I and Leo III.
THINGS TO KNOW: The modern look of the church is, for the most part, thanks to Paul II who in the the middle of the 1400s had his residence as Cardinal built around the church, which after his ascension to the papal seat was greatly expanded: Palazzo San Marco (today Palazzo Venezia). Since then, the basilica is a sort of grandiose chapel encompassed by the building.
