Built in the Sixth Century by Honorius I on top of a taberna (an ancient style of shop or tavern) of Ceasar's Forum, it was restored in 1256 and at the end of the 1500s on a commission by Pope Sixtus V to the Accademia del Disegno or San Luca. The reconstruction, designed by Ottaviano Mascherino and Pietro da Cortona (1623-24), is one of the masterpieces of roman baroque. The work actually started after 1626, when Francesco Barberini became patron of the academy and the work itself went on from 1635 to 1664.
