Built on medieval ruins, it was inhabited since 1642 by cardinal Maurice of Savoy. In the following century Benedetto Alfieri restructured it (1739-67) to use it as the residence of Benedetto Maurizio of Savoy, count of Chiablese, while in the Napoleonic period governor Camillo Borghese stayed here. Its rococo rooms were first home to the National Cinema Museum (now in the Mole Antonelliana) while today it houses the Regional Department for Cultural and Landscape Heritage of Piedmont.
