Born in Rome from the Asti-native family of counts Alfieri di Cortemilia, Alfieri studied at the Jesuit boarding school before graduating in Turin. In Asti he was councillor and mayor (1726-30) and his architectural highlights included the Town Hall, Palazzo Alfieri and the Episcopal Seminary.
His career took a turning point in Turin, where he worked at the service of Charles Emmanuel III of Savoy who appointed him successor of Filippo Juvarra as “principal architect”.
In the Savoyard capital, he continued working on the Hunting Residence of Stupinigi, the Royal Palace, the Venaria Palace and in Palazzo Falletti di Barolo; he designed from scratch Teatro Regio, Piazza Palazzo di Città, the Bell Tower of the Basilica of San Gaudenzio of Novara and Duomo of Carignano.
Vittorio Alfieri, the son of a cousin of his, remembered him with admiration and affection in his Vita.
