The icon depicts the Virgin breast-feeding Christ, surrounded by a series of Saints, among them Peter and Paul in the upper section and Saint Mark in the center. Created at the end of the thirteenth century and the start of the fourteenth century, it is remembered in the Basilica since 1517 and is considered the progenitor of successive venetian icons.
