L’esposizione ospiterà una selezione di circa trenta opere recenti, inediti ad Arezzo. La personale presenta il percorso astratto dell’artista americana nell’ultimo anno di attività, una sorta di “ready-made Dada Pop”, e proseguirà, a ingresso gratuito, fino a mercoledì 2 aprile 2014 con il seguente orario: dal martedì al sabato, dalle ore 16 alle 20 o dietro appuntamento (chiuso domenica e lunedì). Danielle Villicana D’Annibale è una personalità vivace e poliedrica. Musicista, teatrante, studiosa d’arte, pittrice, scultrice, ceramista, scenografa, curatrice e gallerista, ella ha preparato la mostra ispirandosi ai pensieri di Marcel Duchamp e Francis Bacon. Una personale che da evento espositivo si trasforma in gioco teatrale, grazie a dipinti informali in cui la materia densa e lacerata dialoga con la tridimensionalità dei pacchetti di sigarette e di zucchero, o con i blisters di medicinali, andando a creare un linguaggio complesso e distintivo. Tre i protagonisti: pacchetti pieno di zucchero, blister vuoto di medicinali e pacchetto vuoto di sigarette. Oggetti all’apparenza privi di valore, che acquistano nuovi significati. "Si tratta di opere dai toni sgargianti – " spiega critico d’arte Matilde Puleo, " – dalle composizioni ora rigorosamente geometriche ora più scomposte che lasciano correre tra le righe una leggerezza che parrebbe essere una critica alla società dei consumi, ma che in realtà, lascia spazio all'ottimismo – per dare un nome alla doppiezza delle nostre convinzioni, sempre a metà strada tra l’incertezza paralizzante e la presunzione di essere noi il furbo di turno". Amici e nemici, conforti e paure, elisir di lunga vita e veleni mortali. Ci serve tutto quello zucchero? E i medicinali ci salvano davvero la vita? Il fumo ci dà pace e serenità? Grazie a loro possiamo vivere felici e contenti? Questi e altri i quesiti che Danielle Villicana D’Annibale lancia con una mostra eccentrica che, come afferma critico d’arte Francesco Giulio Farachi, "con orma festosa, entra dagli occhi, lacera i veli del nostro disincanto, ci toglie la maschera rassicurante dello spettatore e ci conduce nel teatro dei giorni nostri per farci ritrovare al centro d’un palcoscenico allestito dove incontriamo sempre le nostre paure, la nostra ignavia, la nostra gioia drogata, la nostra inconsapevolezza e la nostra ragione. La scoperta, ancora estetica, ma non più estatica, del mondo che noi facciamo".
Dicono di lei: “…non si può delimitare l’attività artistica di Danielle Villicana, proprio perché l’artista esprime una volontà onnivora di abbracciare stili, movimenti, linguaggi, tecniche e media, ma che converge in un solo grande progetto, mai fermarsi, superare di continuo i limiti per condurre nuove esperienze cognitive che è poi il senso più profondo dell’arte. Ma forse potremmo suggerire un percorso che, tenendo conto delle nutrite sollecitazioni e seduzioni, vede Danielle Villicana partire dalla solida costruzione e concretezza del “mestiere” dell’artista, ripercorrendo la storia dell’arte per rivendicare anche l’affresco, e arrivare gradatamente a spogliarsi del bagaglio classico e figurativo, accedere all’astrattismo e all’informale, approdare all’oggettuale, al combine painting di Rauschenberg, per ritrovare infine una libertà espressiva che coniughi vita e arte". Danielle Villicana D’Annibale nasce a San Francisco, in California, nel 1972. Nel 1994 si laurea in Storia dell’arte e arti visive al B.A. Occidental College di Los Angeles. L’amore per il Rinascimento la porta in Italia nello stesso anno, dove frequenta importanti maestri e atelier fiorentini, dallo Charles Cecil Studios alla Florence Academy, fino allo studio di Silvestro Pistolesi nel 1996. In seguito apprende la tecnica dell’affresco alla scuola di Leonetto Tintori di Prato. Nel 2001 si iscrive all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma dove ha per docente Costantino Baldino. Prosegue nel frattempo con le ricerche plastiche e pittoriche, virando verso l’astrazione: prende vita la serie Cigarette Box Paintings. Con il diploma accademico conseguito nel 2006, la statunitense si trasferisce ad Arezzo, dove può vivere a stretto contatto con l’arte di Piero della Francesca. Coadiuvata dal marito Maurizio D’Annibale, light designer, Danielle inizia a lavorare al progetto “Villa Margherita un Paradiso per Artisti in Toscana” e apre, nel 2010, una galleria d’arte contemporanea nel cuore di Arezzo, da subito luogo d’incontro privilegiato per artisti italiani e stranieri. Dal 1994 ha partecipato a mostre personali e collettive in Italia e Stati Uniti. Fa parte del California Art Club ed è fondatrice, assieme al marito, del “Villa Margherita International Art Club”. Principali attività professionali: Nel 1993 Danielle Villicana D’Annibale ha svolto il ruolo di assistente a Eugenia Butler per il progetto The Kitchen Table Project presentato ad ART/LA’93, dove erano presenti artisti del calibro di Marina Abramovic, Carolee Schneemann, Felipe Ehrenberg e altre trenta figure di livello internazionale. Dal 1998 al 2000 è stata scultrice per Treadway Industries nell’ambito dei progetti Venetian Hotel & Casino, Aladdin Gaming, Universal Studios Giappone, Disney California Adventure e altri. Nel 1999 ha svolto la mansione di pittrice e decoratrice per Saltman Art per Burbank Los Angeles e Venetian Hotel & Casino. Nel 2003 è stata assistente scenografa di Francesco Frigeri, a Cinecittà, per il film The Passion of the Christ di Mel Gibson. The exposition will host a selection of approximately 30 recent works of art, all of which will be displayed for the first time in Arezzo. The solo exhibition presents the abstract path of the American artist in her past year of activity, a sort of “ready-made Dada Pop” which will remain visible, at free entrance, until Wednesday, April 2, 2014, with the following hours: Tuesday to Saturday, from 4PM to 8PM (closed Sunday & Monday) or by appointment. Danielle Villicana D’Annibale is a vivacious and multifaceted personality. Musician, thespian, art scholar, painter, sculptor, ceramist, scenografer, curator and gallerist, she prepared the exhibit inspired by thoughts about Marcel Duchamp and Francis Bacon. The artist presents a solo exhibition which transforms an expository event into a theatrical game, thanks to informal paintings in which dense material and the lacerated dialogue with the three-dimensionality of the packs of cigarettes and sugar, and with blisters and medicines, create a complex and distinct language. Three protagonists: full packets of sugar, empty medicine blister and empty packs of cigarettes. Objects which appear to be privy of value, which acquire new meanings. It deals with works with garish tones – explains the art critic Matilde Puleo, “… from the compositions now rigorously geometric now more decomposed that allow to race among the lines a lightness that would seem to be a criticism to the society of consumption, but that in reality, leaves space to the optimism … to give a name to the double sidedness of our convictions, always half the road between the paralyzing uncertainty and the conceitedness that we be the cunning one the moment.” Friends and enemies, comforts and fears, elixir of long life and mortal poisons. Do we need all this sugar? And these medicines do they really save our lives? Does smoke give us peace and serenity? Thanks to them can we live happily and contented? These and other queries that Danielle Villicana D’Annibale lances with an eccentric exhibit, which art critic Francesco Giulio Farachi affirms, “… with festive track, it enters from the eyes, it lacerates the veils of our disenchantment, it removes from us the reassuring mask of the spectator and it conducts us in the theater of our days for it stuffed to find again to the center of a prepared stage where we always meet our fears, our sloth, our drugged joy, our unawareness and our reason. In 1994 she graduated in Art History and the Visual Arts with a B.A. from Occidental College of Los Angeles. The love for the Renaissance took her to Italy in the same year, where she attended important masters and Florentine atelier, from Charles Cecil Studios to the Florence Academy, to the studio of Silvestro Pistolesi in 1996. Afterwards she learned the technique of fresco at the school of Leonetto Tintori of Prato. In 2001 she enrolled in the Accademia di Belle Arti of Rome. She continued on the meantime her plastic and pictorial research, veering towards abstraction: the series Cigarette Box Paintings took life. With the academic diploma obtained in 2006, the American transferred to Arezzo, where she may live in close contact with the art of Piero della Francesca. Collaborating with her husband Maurizio D’Annibale, light designer, Danielle Villicana began working on the project Villa Margherita a Paradise for Artists in Tuscany and opened, in 2010, a contemporary art gallery in the heart of the city, immediately becoming a favored meeting place for Italian and foreign artists. Since 1994 she has participated in solo and group exhibits in Italy and the United States. She is a member of the California Art Club and co-founder with her husband, Maurizio D'Annibale, of the "Villa Margherita International Art Club."
