L'Assunta
Museo Civico D’Arte Antica – Palazzo Madama
The large painting was made as a "cover" of the statue of the Virgin located on the high altar of the church of Santa Maria del Monte. During religious holidays the altar piece was lifted as a curtain to show the sculpture to the faithful. The lesson of Caravaggio on the use of light learnt by Gentileschi in Rome here is clear in the figures of the Virgin in the middle, the angels surrounding her and the Glorified Trinity.
