The Lamentation of Christ
Museo Civico D’Arte Antica – Palazzo Madama
This group of eight sculpted figures from the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption in Santa Maria Maggiore (Verbano Cusio Ossola) features an iconographic subject that is very widespread in the Alpine valleys near the Po plain, especially in Franciscan circles. It is thought to be the work of the carver Domenico Merzagora, who was from the Ossola area. The gestures of the figures are filled with the pathos that is typical of these portrayals of the Passion.
