MIA Photo Fair 2016 - Luca Gilli photographs ICE Yachts
From 28 Aprile 2016 to 02 Maggio 2016
Milan
Place: The Mall – Milano Porta Nuova
Address: p.zza Lina Bo Bardi
The MIA Photo Fair, the event being held from 28 April to 2 May that Milan devotes to artistic photography, is to provide the setting for the presentation of the exhibition devised by Luca Gilli for ICE Yachts, a shipyard that focuses on developing special solutions involving the application of innovative technologies.
Six large-format photographs have been selected from a portfolio that follows the birth and growth of a typical vessel step by step, provide a summary of the intriguing balance this company achieves between the skills of an age-old craftsmanship and the dazzling potential of high-tech.
“We are convinced that only the language of photography has what it takes to tell the whole story of the kind of work we do here” explains Marco Malgara, managing director of ICE Yachts. “Because to a base of precise, measured technical process it adds intuition, flair and that slightly magical variable that makes every shot unique and inimitable. The approach is uncannily like our own: to a solid base of practical shipbuilding, we add the imagination that new technologies enable us to use.”
Luca Gilli’s project continues seamlessly in the vein of the major focus that Italian photography has devoted in recent decades to industry and its settings (starting with Gabriele Basilico’s ‘portraits of factories’ and culminating in the latest works by Olivo Barbieri and Carlo Valsecchi), while at the same time demonstrating the ability to venture with prodigious originality along many a less beaten track. The kind of track that leads him to observe the dynamics of small and medium-sized enterprises, the throbbing heart of Italy’s manufacturing fabric that has always been the symbol of creativity, imagination, courage and innovation.
Luca Gilli (1965) lives and works in Cavriago (Reggio nell’Emilia). His photographs feature in private and museum collections of photography and contemporary art, both in Italy and abroad: the National Library of France in Paris, the Museum of Photography in Charleroi, the Berlin Art Library, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Strasbourg, the Réattu Museum in Arles, the National School of Fine Arts in Paris and the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography.
ICE Yachts is a new entrepreneurial venture with a young brand, but major acquired experience. The firm is the result of what can happen when professionals experienced in working in the field of shipbuilding meet with peers who bring comparable background from the automobile industry and both are charged with a real passion for innovative materials: they pooled their interests and their know-how in the newly-established ICE Yachts. ICE Yachts’ mission is to apply special technologies for custom production both to yacht building and to architecture and the high-tech and automotive industries.
