This splendid villa was built for Cardinal Giovanni Ricci who had it created by transforming a pre-existing residence between 1564-75; it was purchased from him in 1576 by Ferdinando de’ Medici, who expanded it and added the gallery of statues. Its structure with side turrets has a simple facade but is richly decorated in the back by florentine Bartolomeo Ammannati with stucchi, bas-reliefs and statues. The splendid garden maintains much of its original charm with paths lined with hedges and flower beds.
Since 1804, it has been the home of the Accademia di Francia, founded in 1666 by Louis XIV to help perfect french artists.
