The building, built under Cardinal Girolamo Capodiferro (1548-50), has a facade of exemplary rusticated mason work, enriched with niches containing statues of the Illustrious Men of the History of Rome and the works of the Cardinal. A dog is placed at the foot of a fiery column with a scroll that reads Utroque Tempore (“throughout time”), a sign of fidelity to the Catholic Church. The interior courtyard is decorated in like-manner with Statues of Pagan Divinities and friezes with the Centauromachy.
The building was purchased in 1632 by Cardinal Bernardino Spada, who commissioned various works including the prospective gallery created by Borromini. Today the building is host to the Galleria Spada and the Italian State Council.
