The building was built as the new residence for Saint Mark’s Procurators, the most important political role after the doge, as a replacement of the previous offices on the opposite side of the square. Built by Vincenzo Scamozzi in 1582 by demolishing the old Orseolo hospice, they continue the Sansovino’s Library elevating it by one floor to close the Southern wall of the square. They were only completed in 1640 by Baldassarre Longhena and in the Napoleonic age they were turned into Royal Palace. Today they house Museo Correr.
