Martyrdom of St Bartholomew

Giambattista Tiepolo, Martyrdom of St Bartholomew, 1722, Venice, Church of San Stae.
The presbytery of the church houses a series of paintings showing the twelve apostles, painted by the most important Venetian artists of the eighteenth century, thanks to the bequest of Andrea Stazio (1722). The young Tiepolo is the artist behind the Martyrdom of St Bartholomew, in which the saint turns dramatically to heaven as he is skinned alive by the two executioners.
