Triumph of the Franciscan Order
The Church of the Twelve Holy Apostles
Baciccia created this enormous fresco following the model of one painted years earlier at the Chiesa del Gesù, depicting the Triumph of the Name of Jesus (1685). Together with the other fresco, it represents one of the great achievements of religious baroque art, that in this “setting” reaches great heights of theatricality, equal to that of the sculpture of Bernini. Christ resurrected appears up high, radiating out of an intense light, while below are the major saints of the Franciscan Order.
