Founded in 1889 as part of the Museo Nazionale Romano for ancient extra-urban civilizations of the provinces of Rome, Umbria and Sabina, the collection grew at the start of the 1900s. After being moved to EUR, the institution was reorganized by Franco Minissi (1955-60).
The villa which houses the museum was built by Giorgio Vasari, Bartolomeo Ammannati and Vignola for the florentine Pope Giulio III (1551-55). The two-story building has a risalit, a nymphaeum and is surrounded by a garden.
