Filippo Juvarra’s masterpiece is located on top of a 670m-high hill easy to reach on the 1934 steep grade tramway. Built between 1717 and 1731, it was commissioned by Victor Amadeus II to fulfil a vow. It has a circular plan, a high dome flanked by bell towers and a monumental facade with large Corinthian columns, forming a splendid pronaos topped by a triangular gable. Destination of pilgrimages, especially for the chapel of Grazie, it is considered to be the Pantheon of Savoyard kings and princes. On the wall of the back embankment on 4th May 1949 the airplane carrying the entire Torino Football Club “Grande Torino” team crashed, causing 31 victims.
