The convent of San Zaccaria was the most important all-girls religious institute of Venice and was closely connected to the doge and the city nobility. The church existed since the IX century but in 1458 it was decided to make a new one placing it side by side with the previous one. The works were started by Antonio Gambello who made the polygonal apse chapels radiating tangentially from the bays, a unique example in Venice. When Gambello died, Mauro Codussi erected the current facade that stands out in the entire campo.
