Dieter Roelstraete will join Olivian Cha in conversation about the exhibition "to the everyday miracle", a solo exhibition of Corita Kent on view at kaufmann repetto in Milan.
Corita Kent (1918–1986) was an artist, educator, and advocate for social justice whose work reflects the ascendancy of Pop Art, the spiritual renewal of the Second Vatican Council and the political activism of the 1960s. The exhibition in Milan presents a retrospective view, featuring serigraphs and watercolors spanning across her career, from the 1950s through the 1980s. In this conversation, Roelstraete and Cha will discuss Kent's practice at the intersection of art, language and politics.
Dieter Roelstraete is curator of the Neubauer Collegium at the University of Chicago, where he also teaches. Recent curatorial projects there have featured the work of Cecilia Vicuña, Jason Dodge, Martha Rosler, and Pope.L. He previously worked as a curator for documenta 14 in Kassel and Athens in 2017. From 2012 until 2015 he served as the Manilow Senior Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, where he organized The Way of the Shovel: Art as Archaeology (2013), Simon Starling: Metamorphology (2015), and Kerry James Marshall: Mastry (2016) among other exhibitions. From 2003 to 2011 Roelstraete worked at the Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen, where he curated exhibitions featuring Chantal Akerman, Liam Gillick & Lawrence Weiner, and survey shows of contemporary art from Rio de Janeiro (A Rua, 2011) and Vancouver (Intertidal: Vancouver Art & Artists, 2005). He has published extensively on contemporary art and related philosophical issues, and is currently working on a book dedicated to the phenomenon of the philosopher's hut and the architecture of exile and retreat.
Olivian Cha is the Curator and Collections Manager for the Corita Art Center. Cha holds an MA in Art History and an MS in Library and Information Sciences, both from the University of California, Los Angeles. Prior to her tenure at CAC, she held research and curatorial positions at the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles), Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Getty Research Institute, and Central Public Library (Los Angeles). She is currently working on a catalogue raisonné of Corita Kent’s serigraphs, slated to be published in Fall 2022 with Atelier Éditions.
Please note: the talk will take place via Zoom in English and will be recorded. Participants will be sent a login link upon registration.
