Double Portrait
The painting shows two noble characters depicted in three-quarters-body-length and positioned right next to each other. Unfortunately, the nobles' identities are not known but critics suppose them to be Luther and Calvin, Andrea Doria and Christopher Columbus and the lesser known Andrea Navagero and Beazzano di Agostino. The attribution to Raffael has always been controversial, but the extraordinary phychological depth of the painting is considered the confirmation of his authorship.
