The Galleria L’Occhio presents a solo exhibition of Alessandro Cardinale "In Between", edited by Elizabeth Donaggio.
The exhibition includes some new works on the series Nu Shu and the work exhibited in 2014 at Factory 798 Art District in Beijing on the occasion of the Biennale China - Italy.
Nu Shu is a work focused on writing and communication, in particular it is a reflection on the dynamics of understanding a message. This work is based on the Nu Shu, a secret language created by women in the imperial era in China in the region of 'Hunan, unknown to man, to be able to communicate with each other through their memories and experiences of the fans and embroidery on clothes that they were exchanged by man for simple decorations. It instead of encrypted messages that were handed down from generation to generation as a silent witness of women of that time. Like a sculpture has different viewpoints this work also changes depending on the observer's viewpoint to change completely in both appearance and meaning. The work is composed of a set of strips of cotton mounted on a wooden frame to retrieve the fans on which were written the messages. The cotton strips are shaped by hand one by one and assembled in such a way that only a certain location you can hear a female face east but, once lost that position, the "message" back to being incomprehensible.
