The building, born as a residence for Cardinal Pietro Barbo, presiding over the Basilica di S. Marco, elected Pope with the name of Paolo II (1464-71), became home to the embassy of Venice (1564-1797) and then Austria (1797-1916). The museum, instituted in 1921 by F. Hermanin, shared its spaces with the fascist government from 1929 to 1943. Today the collection is spread throughout 30 halls hosting collections of paintings, wooden sculpture, porcelain, ceramics, bronzes, marbles, terracotta, arms, making it one of the most eclectic in the city.
