Madonna of the Pilgrims or Loreto
The altar piece of the Cavalletti Chapel depicting the Virgin and Baby Jesus standing on his tippy-toes at the door of the "Santa Casa" (the Holy Home), according to legend, brought to Loreto by angels, venerated by two pilgrims shown as common folk, poorly dressed, carrying staffs and with their feet dirty - classic Caravaggio. These elements are not casual, but pointed to poverty itself. Caravaggio was close to the paupers of his time and placed them in stark contrast to the extraordinary wealth of the church.
